With everything that has been going on this last week here in the U.S., I thought today we could write a poem around the photo below, after all, they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

The first instrument I ever played I believe was the recorder in school. There might have been other instruments when I was in Kindergarten but I really don't remember. In the fifth grade I moved up to drums, I loved playing the drums. In Junior High I played the flute, I wasn't ever really good at it but I enjoyed it.
When I was a young adult I began playing around with hand drums, absolutely love them. Now I play the Native American flute and my granddaughters often ask me to play for them at bedtime.

Day 31 Prompt: Eternal
When I think of eternal, I think there isn't much that is eternal, at least not on this earth. When I wrote this prompt, I believe I was thinking how even though OctPoWriMo is coming to an end, our words are forever - what we wrote during this month and beyond. What does eternal mean to you?

Day 27 Prompt: Favorite Scent
Fragrance is a powerful thing. It can bring you back to your favorite meal your mother used to make, to your first kiss, to any number of events in your life.
Free write for 10 minutes and see where your nose leads you, if your words need some encouragement, walk outside, down the street, through a mall, through a forest until your nose reminds you and the words begin to flow.

My dear poetic friends, First off, let me apologize to those of you eagerly awaiting the prompt on Sunday. UNDOUBTEDLY, something went wrong on my end and I let it get by me. My husband and I spent the weekend continuing with cleanup and inventory for insurance after Hurricane Matthew. Things are still nowhere near back to "normal" (whatever that is), but we have shelter, food, transportation, and each other. I am blessed. Now on to today's prompt!
What does "abandonment" mean to you? The above image shows it as a negative cycle. I can tell you that as an adoptee, I deal with abandonment issues all the time. However, there are ways to view this word in a positive way. There is a group on Facebook that is dedicated to spreading joy around the world through free art. Check out the Art Abandonment public group, if you're interested in sharing your own art!

Day 25 Prompt: Red
When I was growing up I extremely disliked the color red, not sure if the fact I had red hair had anything to do with it or not. It wasn't until a few years back that I started to enjoy red and now I love it. I completely embrace red! How about you? Love it? Hate it? Don't feel anything about it?
I have always enjoyed big red barns though, I think it is because my great grandparents lived/owned/worked on their ranch with a big red barn and farmhouse. I loved having family gatherings out there.

Possibilities:
Some things are obviously dangerous, like walking too close to a cliff, and other things, not so much. Free write for ten minutes exploring what is obviously dangerous, not so much, and what dangerous means to you.

When was the last time you were out in nature? A nature walk? Lake, ocean, river? If you are able, get outside for a little while today, smell the air, listen to the birds, see what animals are nearby and then sit down to write. I'm enjoying my new job but I miss reading more of your poems. I haven't worked at a regular job in years and it is definitely taxing but I feel good about it. I'm trying to stay positive about the fact that it is taking so long to make a living from writing. For now it is going to have to be a part time endeavor.
On a super positive note, I was able to get my car fixed today which has been out of commission for several weeks. Yay!

I love trees, all types of trees, especially gnarly unusual trees. I even wrote a short story about a tree on my blog years ago - Essence of Life. I've been known to hug trees, sit below them and write and of course take lots and lots of photos of them.

Trees are necessary for our very existence on this earth, they produce the air we breathe. We build houses with them and create many products that we use everyday with them.

There's so much going on the the world today where the word "senseless" would apply. Take a few minutes to free write about things you find to be senseless. Or perhaps you've experienced being "senseless" as described in this Huffington Post article. (I have and it was GLORIOUS!)
