Keeping Poetry Simple - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I like to keep things simple for OctPoWriMo, if there are too many rules or things get too complicated within a poetry form, I tend to move on to something else. For me keeping things simple with poetry means that I often choose a word from a book to write a poem or work with my magnets like I did again this morning.

Playing with my magnets.
I tend to write free form though I've been known to write Haiku, The Blitz, Rhyme (self explanatory), Shape poetry and I do favor the Acrostic, oh and for some reason I seem to love counting and playing with syllables. I've experimented with others but for the most part those are where I tend to play with words.

Do you have a favorite poetry form and if you do, what is it?

Poetry is Emotions... OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I decided to re-post this one from September 2014, it follows along with the post from yesterday.

-------------

Writing poetry everyday can be a challenge, which of course that is what OctPoWriMo is about. Well at least to some degree. It's about poetry and word awareness. It's about inspiring and sharing poetry with the world. It's about understanding that writing poetry really can be for everyone.

Poetry is emotions transferred to the page. We all have emotions, we all feel pain, love, loss, caring, and more.

Writing poetry can be a traditional form, a made up form, or free form. It can make sense, or not.

Gather your tools, your list of words, your magnets, your books, open to your senses, open to your feelings and give yourself permission to write a poem everyday.

Keep it simple.

What are you feeling?

What are you seeing?

To write poetry everyday, is to relax into the words, to not make it complicated, to allow yourself to write whatever comes up for you.

Come to the page at the same time everyday, or not.

Write in a notebook, on your blog, in Evernote, 750words.com, Yarny or even on Twitter as micropoetry in 140 characters or less.

There is no right or wrong way to participate in this challenge. You can write 31 poems in 31 days, we can do it together.

What's your poetry experience?

How often do you write poetry?  When did you start writing?  What did your friends/family say?  Have you ever shared your poetry before?

I find the different ways poetry is perceived so fascinating. It can be a scholarly pursuit or a emotional journey. A life's journal entry or press for the front page. Depending on where you are in life, it can take on an entirely different meaning.

When I was younger, my poetry was more of an emotional outlet. Now, I think of my poetry as somewhat of a confessional and somewhat of an observational tool in my life. What is poetry in your life?

Whether poetry is your secret or it's your version of a billboard- thank you for sharing with us. I can't wait to see what you'll come up with over the month.

It's all happening!

OctPoWriMo Is Coming Soon!

The time is almost here for another 31 poems in 31 days in October! I am looking for volunteers to help with tips (in Sept.) and prompts (in Oct.) posts, writing encouraging comments on the participants posts, and sharing OctPoWriMo on social media.

We are also looking for guest posts regarding poetry books, your poetry process, your journey to poetry or any other story about your poetry journey that you would like to share with OctPoWriMo.

If you participated last year or the year before, we would love for you to share your OctPoWriMo experience with us and we will post it during Sept. on OctPoWriMo.com. It can be anything from a paragraph to 500 words long.

If you are interested in any of the above, please contact me either by messaging me on my Facebook page, Morgan Dragonwillow, Poet, or by emailing me with the subject, OctPoWriMo at morgan _ dragonwillow @ hotmail . com (make sure you take out all of the spaces when emailing me).
