Poetry Prompts Day 31 - OctPoWriMo 2016

OctPoWriMo year five is coming to a close. I'm so glad you took this journey with us. I hope you will come back during the year and play with your words until you breathe life into them!

Day 31 Prompt: Eternal

When I think of eternal, I think there isn't much that is eternal, at least not on this earth. When I wrote this prompt, I believe I was thinking how even though OctPoWriMo is coming to an end, our words are forever - what we wrote during this month and beyond. What does eternal mean to you?

Suggested poetry type: What new poetry type did you enjoy learning the most this month? Choose your favorite poetry type from this month and write your heart onto the page.

Word Prompts:

eternity
light at the end of the tunnel (I know that's a lot of words:)
open door
bright light
heartfelt

Remember to let your inner child come out to play.

Music for your Muse:

Thanks so much for playing along with us at Poets on the Page for our fifth annual OctPoWriMo, we hope to see you throughout the year and for OctPoWriMo 2017.

Peace from both of us,
Morgan Dragonwillow and Amy McGrath

Poetry Prompts Day 25 - OctPoWriMo 2016

I can't believe we are in the last week of OctPoWriMo, it always goes by so fast. I hope you've enjoyed writing your poems this month and are stilling hanging in there to the end.

Day 25 Prompt: Red

When I was growing up I extremely disliked the color red, not sure if the fact I had red hair had anything to do with it or not. It wasn't until a few years back that I started to enjoy red and now I love it. I completely embrace red! How about you? Love it? Hate it? Don't feel anything about it?

I have always enjoyed big red barns though, I think it is because my great grandparents lived/owned/worked on their ranch with a big red barn and farmhouse. I loved having family gatherings out there.

Here are a couple of other things that I love that are red;

Possibilities:

Free write for ten minutes about the color red and see what comes up for you. Childhood memories or...?

Suggested poetry type: Harrisham Rhyme

Word Prompts:

dark
tantalizing
sensations
tempting
taste-buds

(Okay so those words are some of my feelings around red, you can choose those or make up your own.)

Happy Writing!

Poetry Prompts Day 16 - OctPoWriMo 2016

Whenever I decide to do something new I read everything there is to read about it - gardening, writing, poetry, having babies/children and I know there is more than that but my brain is mush right now. It's been a long day and even though I had a terrific massage, my back is killing me. What are you doing this weekend as we head into the second half of our poetry journey?

Day 16 Prompt: In-depth

Possibilities:

Have you ever researched a subject to the point that you were practically a master in it and it was only a hobby?

Have you ever done anything deeply? Fallen in love, gone into business, tried something with such relentless determination that you barely came up for air?

Write for ten minutes about any of the above, discover how deeply, or not, you have dived into what stirs your passion.

Suggested poetry type: Nonet - I chose this as it seemed like it was diving down with its shape. Or, you could do a shape poem of an upside down triangle.

Word Prompts:

meticulously
assiduously
methodically
perfectly
deeply

Music for your Muse:

Yes, in the past I fell this hard.

Remember, our prompts are only suggestions, where you find inspiration for your poetry is up to you.
During OctPoWriMo, if you want to make sure that we know you have written something new, comment in that day's post with your link to your blog and/or share your link on Twitter with the hashtag, #OctPoWriMo.

Poetry Prompts Day 13 - OctPoWriMo 2016

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” ― Alan W. Watts

Change is usually difficult and you'd think by now I'd know that the best way to maneuver it would be to stop fighting the changes and just go with the flow, but it seems it is my life's mission to learn the hard way.

Day 13 Prompt: Flowing

Possibilities:

Where in your life do you need less struggle and more flow?

Show us a time when you allowed yourself to go with the flow.

Free write for ten minutes around one of the two sentences above or what flow/ing means to you.

Suggested poetry type: Monorhyme

Drawing and coloring help me feel in the flow.

Fantasy - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

Sometimes I like to escape into the world of Sci-fi/fantasy, both in reading fiction and in writing poetry. In writing fantasy poetry, the only limit is the imagination. One of my all time favorite poems is, Phantasmagoria by Lewis Carroll. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend you do.

Do you write ever write Sci-fi/fantasy poetry? If you did, what inspired you to do so?

Being in the Moment - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I'm trying... so hard to "embrace and appreciate the present moment of 'what is.'" but that isn't always easy. In fact it seems darn difficult most of the time. Why do you think that is? Oh yeah, I remember, it's because I'm a bit of a perfectionist control freak. I have this way of seeing how I think things should be, should be. Ugh! I've tried to shrug that piece of me off but it is always there in the background.

With poetry and art, I let go of it. I let go of the shoulds and the shouldn'ts and just let the words flow. It is the only time I really feel I can be right here, right now. Of course that has taken me awhile but in that one moment of creation, it's all good.

Issues, Writing, and Poetry - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

The last few days I've been getting ready for out of town guests arriving tomorrow. I'm currently staying with my daughter and granddaughters and it is my daughter's dad and wife of 20ish years coming to visit. All kinds of issues have been coming up for me. Normally I wouldn't be part of the visit but living here, and unable to go anywhere at this time, I'm going to be here.

Poetry is a great way to deal with past issues that pop up unexpectedly. Free writing can help you get it all on the page and somewhere in the middle or so, things start to come together. That's why my poetry prompts often start out with free writing on whatever the topic of the day is, it helps get things moving. Once you see a thread of possibility, that's when you can decide if you want to create a specific type of poem or continue with free form and play with the words and spacing until you have it the way you want it.

Do you vent through poetry?

Keeping Poetry Simple - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I like to keep things simple for OctPoWriMo, if there are too many rules or things get too complicated within a poetry form, I tend to move on to something else. For me keeping things simple with poetry means that I often choose a word from a book to write a poem or work with my magnets like I did again this morning.

Playing with my magnets.
I tend to write free form though I've been known to write Haiku, The Blitz, Rhyme (self explanatory), Shape poetry and I do favor the Acrostic, oh and for some reason I seem to love counting and playing with syllables. I've experimented with others but for the most part those are where I tend to play with words.

Do you have a favorite poetry form and if you do, what is it?

Poetry is Emotions... OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I decided to re-post this one from September 2014, it follows along with the post from yesterday.

-------------

Writing poetry everyday can be a challenge, which of course that is what OctPoWriMo is about. Well at least to some degree. It's about poetry and word awareness. It's about inspiring and sharing poetry with the world. It's about understanding that writing poetry really can be for everyone.

Poetry is emotions transferred to the page. We all have emotions, we all feel pain, love, loss, caring, and more.

Writing poetry can be a traditional form, a made up form, or free form. It can make sense, or not.

Gather your tools, your list of words, your magnets, your books, open to your senses, open to your feelings and give yourself permission to write a poem everyday.

Keep it simple.

What are you feeling?

What are you seeing?

To write poetry everyday, is to relax into the words, to not make it complicated, to allow yourself to write whatever comes up for you.

Come to the page at the same time everyday, or not.

Write in a notebook, on your blog, in Evernote, 750words.com, Yarny or even on Twitter as micropoetry in 140 characters or less.

There is no right or wrong way to participate in this challenge. You can write 31 poems in 31 days, we can do it together.

----------------------------

What do you think, will you be joining us and diving into all things poetry in October? Have you signed up yet? Take a moment and click on over to OctPoWriMo link up, and sign up today. Remember to tell all your poet friends and lover of words to come check it out by sharing the hashtag #OctPoWriMo across social media!

Magnetic Fun - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I needed a dash of inspiration today and I pulled out my little box of magnetic fun, magnetic poetry. As some of you know, I went through a break up earlier in the year. The last five months, though creative in other ways, I haven't written much poetry. You could say that I need OctPoWriMo to kick start my poetry as any of you.

OctPoWriMo is for everyone and anyone; young or old, new to poetry, poets that write everyday, and poets who may have forgotten the love of words for a time. No matter what brings you here, you will find bits of gold among the prompts that will stir the fire within that is always there waiting.

My Playful Poem:

life brings wisdom
you can
explore the
blush
and
magic of romance
or laugh and make cake

Countdown to OctPoWriMo 2016!

Are you missing NaPoWriMo? Then you are in the right place! OctPoWriMo: 31 Poems in 31 Days, is October Poetry Writing Month, a poetry challenge to write a poem a day (on your blog, in your journal, in our Facebook group, or on other social media) during the month of October and link up your poetry here for all of us to share and support each other on this poetry journey. You can find inspiration through our daily poetry prompts or write from your own prompts.

In September 2012 I decided it was time that we (poets and lovers of words) had another poetry month besides April. Hence OcPoWriMo (October Poetry Writing Month) was born. What I didn't know was that it is actually poetry month in England in October, happy coincidence.

In the previous years we have had volunteers, and myself, posting daily tips during the countdown in September and the daily prompts in October. This year I am facilitating OctPoWriMo differently.

During September I will be posting countdown fun leading up to OctPoWriMo and asking you to sign up on the Link Up page. On the last day of September I will be posting the FULL LIST of poetry prompts for October.  Yes I will still be posting daily here for the OctPoWriMo adventure, but in the past many asked if they could see the prompts ahead of time. I also wanted to make sure that I had a list to share on Instagram.

Still lots of poetry fun to be had by all!

So hop on over to the OctPoWriMo link up, sign up today and remember to tell all your poet friends and lover of words with the hashtag #OctPoWriMo across social media!

Peace,

“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” ― Philip Pullman

Several years ago I was searching through the photos on PublicDomainPictures.net and came upon the above photo. I immediately started hearing a story poem that I ended up writing called Blind. Most of the time my poetry tends to be either how I am feeling or something from my life but sometimes, I enjoy writing story poetry.

Poetry Prompt:

Search through the photos at PublicDomainPictures.net until you find one that sparks a story poem for you.

Word Prompts:

Imaginary
tale
adventure
drama
fantasy

Poetry Type:
With my poem, Blind, I chose to count syllables (I chose 4) and every line the same amount of syllables with the rhyming abcb format. You can choose to do the same as I did or you can go and choose a different type at ShadowPoetry.com

Poetry Prompt 20 - Love Poetry

“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” ― Maya Angelou

Poetry Prompt:

Time to write a love poem. Now just because it is a love poem doesn't mean it has to be between lovers, it can be the love you had for your favorite pet when you were growing up (or now), it could be for your kids, it could be your best friend. Or, you could do something fun from a prompt I shared in the 2013 OctPoWriMo, Love Letters, Not What You Are Expecting.

Word Prompts:

fondness
tenderness
warmth
intimacy
attachment
endearment

Possible Poetry type: Loop Poetry, an invented form at Shadowpoetry.com

I have discovered a new poet, at least a new poet to me, Andrea Gibson. Gibson's poetry speaks to me on many levels and if you haven't read Gibson's poetry I highly recommend it. I just bought, The Madness Vase and can't wait to dive into it. Have you discovered any new poetry books lately?
