Poetry Prompt - Reflection

Besides reading and writing poetry I have been studying how to write memoir. For me my poetry and my memoir go hand in hand, they both tell a story, they both dive into the darkness and pull out pieces of me.

As I look at the stories that make up my life I see again and again how everything is a reflection of what is going on inside of me; how the universe provides experiences for me to learn from as I maneuver through this life.

January Poetry Mini-Challenge: Prompt #5 - Just Right

We did it! Day 5 of the January Mini-Challenge is here! Have you managed to write with us all week? If so, congratulations on your amazing accomplishment! If you haven't, that's ok, too. Join with us today. Your timing is "just right"!

On the first day of this challenge, I said there was a theme for the week - a method to my madness. Did you figure it out? Your prompts (clues) have been COLD, HOT, BIG, and SMALL. Your final hint is in the first paragraph above ... "just right". Now do you know where my inspiration came from?

If you guessed that I was inspired by the children's story Goldilocks and the Three Bears, then you are absolutely right! YOU WIN! YYyyyaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!! Don't ask me where this idea came from, though. I have no clue - but I hope it's been fun for you anyway!

Today, I want things to be "just right". What does that look like for you? What does "just right" feel like? sound like? smell like? taste like? Use all of your senses to lead you to today's poem.

Poetry Prompt: Write a "just right" poem. Tell us about the perfect place, time, person, pair of jeans or shoes... whatever it is that is "just right" for you.

Word Prompts: Right or Perfect or maybe even Comfortable

~ Amy McGrath

Please share a link to your poem below in the comments. Thank you for taking part in this challenge. We return to weekly prompts on Monday. The next mini-challenge will be the second week of February. Keep writing!

January Poetry Mini-Challenge: Prompt #4 - Small

Welcome! I hope you’re having as much fun with this mini-challenge as I am! If this is your first time joining us, don’t worry. You can come in at any point of the challenge as each prompt can stand alone… at least that’s my intent!

Thus far in the challenge,we have written about:
Cold
Hot
Big

That means today’s prompt is a “small” one. Small hands, small child, small world, small mind... what does "small" make you think of?

Poetry Prompt: Write a “small” poem. Perhaps you take that literally and write a haiku or another short form. Or maybe you will choose to write about something small - perhaps even microscopically so!

Word Prompt: Small

January Poetry Mini-Challenge: Prompt #3 - Big

Welcome to day 3 of the January Mini-Challenge! If you're new to this challenge, just jump right in. No previous experience necessary and no need to go back to the earlier days of the challenge (unless you just WANT to, of course!)

On Monday, I assured you that there was a "theme" for the week that would be made known on Friday. If you're trying to guess what it is, today's prompt might help. For the past two days, we've written about "cold" and "hot". Today, I'd like us to think "BIG".

What comes to mind for you when you hear the word "big"? Jot down a few thoughts in a free write, then start playing with your words and see where it leads you.

Poetry Prompt: Write a "BIG" poem. Big doesn't have to mean lengthy, but it can. Or write about a BIG idea or something that is physically BIG. It's your poem, write it your way!

Word Prompt: (you guessed it!) BIG

January Poetry Mini-Challenge: Prompt #1 - Cold

Welcome to January’s mini-challenge! I’m so glad you are here and I hope you will share your writing with us this week!

Much like last month’s mini-challenge, there is a method to the madness here. However, I’m going to keep the theme a secret until Friday. See if, through the week, you can figure out where my inspiration came from for this challenge!

It’s winter here in the eastern US and for the past several days, the weather has turned bitterly cold. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of this weather pattern. I much prefer flip-flops, capri pants and t-shirts over boots, jeans, and sweaters. But I’ve made the choice in my life to live somewhere that has distinct seasons, so I try not to complain (too much) about the cold.

What does “cold” bring to mind for you? Is it cold weather? A cold beverage? A cold personality? Explore this word in a stream-of-consciousness free write and see what comes up for you.

The Prompt: Write a poem about cold using whatever meaning of the word comes up for you.

Word Prompt: Cold

Image Prompts: (I’m including several of these - choose one (or none!)

Poets on the Page Prompt - Direction - January 6, 2014

I might be the only poet here who sometimes finds myself stumbling around without direction, begging someone to please bring a flashlight and hiking boots because we are trekking out to find my way, finally.

Here we are, writing poetry in the first week of the New Year. I had to ask myself this morning, "Is the first week gone yet?"

So much has happened I feel like it should be May.

I do know that if I simply get back up, dust myself off, and take steps in the direction I am called the rest will take care of itself.

This week we will use the theme of "Direction" - you may take that in a multitude of places (I almost said directions!)

I think of maps, GPS devices, lost and found goodies, playing red light and green light as a child.... the possibilities are endless.

Take a few moments to brainstorm a list to create the beginning of possible themes for your direction poem.

I also offer a poem link to also serve as inspiration. Perhaps grab a line from the poem and use it as a prompt. Here is Finding the Direction by Stephen Dobbyns

As always, feel free to use the image as your poetry prompt as well.

I look forward to reading your words, as always.
