NaPoWriMo - Remember

Today kicks off the National Poetry Month, NaPoWriMo. We are not doing daily prompts for this but we, the volunteers at Poets on the Page, will be sharing some of our poetry with you.

I am struggling with what love means, love as in LOVE. I've started dating again after a two year hiatus. It is a struggle for me. When I find someone that I care about, my heart gets involved pretty quickly. It's all or nothing for me. I think it has to do with being an empath, I tend to feel things quite deeply. Probably why I chose not to date for two years. I will be exploring what love means to me through my poetry this month. Here is my first exploration through loop poetry. I chose loop poetry as it helps me dive deeper into my thoughts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
remember
remember to find that special someone
someone that is the other half of me
me on the inside is being pulled out
out of the dark and into the light
light expanding outward brighter than the sun
sun rises in the morning, shining through the darkness
darkness crushes the internal light of hope
hope springs upward for all to bathe in
in the beginning everything looks bright
bright like a shining star that died a millennium ago and
and you snuffed out the light as that star dies
dies to the possibilities of you and me together
together will never be today or tomorrow
tomorrow there may be hope if I allow myself to bloom
bloom like the flower seeds that are buried in the earth
earth walking toward my inner being
being myself is the only way to find happiness
happiness is possible if I remember who I am
I am a spark of divine creation
creation is the ultimate of being here now
now is bright with possibilities if I allow myself to remember
remember
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My heart aches but maybe writing about love through poetry I'll be able to transform how I'm feeling now into glowing from the inside out with my own inner love and light. How are you using poetry this month? Are you reading poetry as well?

What I'm reading:

If you write a poem on your blog for NaPoWriMo and would like to share it with us, place your link in the comments here and/or on the posts with our poems. We look forward to reading your poems.

What Inspires You to Keep Writing Poetry?

Writing poetry is our life's blood; we eat, breathe, and sleep poetry. We share what we love about it, what inspires us, what turns our head, what captures our heart, and what motivates us to keep going, keep allowing our words to flow.

Inspiration for Poetry, photo courtesy of PublicDomainPictures
by CC0 Community
I am a visual person, photos inspire me more than most things. When I am in the flow, I see something that inspires me, I take a photo, and then I write to that photo. It could be the color, the light, the object, the person, that captures my heart and translates to the page.

What inspires you?

What keeps me going, keeps me writing poetry? It is to understand life, to see it through the lens of my words, to see where they will lead.

What keeps you going?

Prompts:

What was the last photo you captured? Write for ten minutes about the photo. What emotion does it convey? What draws you in?

Word Prompts:

Inspiring
flow
capture
camera

Being in the Moment - OctPoWriMo 2016 Countdown

I'm trying... so hard to "embrace and appreciate the present moment of 'what is.'" but that isn't always easy. In fact it seems darn difficult most of the time. Why do you think that is? Oh yeah, I remember, it's because I'm a bit of a perfectionist control freak. I have this way of seeing how I think things should be, should be. Ugh! I've tried to shrug that piece of me off but it is always there in the background.

With poetry and art, I let go of it. I let go of the shoulds and the shouldn'ts and just let the words flow. It is the only time I really feel I can be right here, right now. Of course that has taken me awhile but in that one moment of creation, it's all good.

Poetry Prompts -

“There is no work-life balance. We have one life. What's most important is that you be awake for it.” ― Janice Marturano
Photo courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.net by Lilla Frerichs

April was a month filled to the brim and then some; so many changes, so many things to do, and very little time for peace. Balance is something I have always struggled with and I've decided that is a perfect topic for this week's prompt as I'm going to delve into what it really means for me.

Poetry Prompts:

Write for ten minutes asking what balance means to you, how balanced or unbalanced your life is, and/or what feels balanced to you.

Or...

Write about balance in nature, where you see it and/or feel it.

Word Prompts:

Balancing
Stability
Equilibrium

Possible poetry type: Etheree

May you uncover your truth as you play with your words.

Poetry Prompts - Extraordinary Choices

“A tree can be tempted out of its winter dormancy by a few hours of southerly sun—the readiness to believe in spring is stronger than sleep or sanity.” ― Amy Leach, Things That Are
Photo courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.net by George Hodan

You can feel the energy of Spring on its way, days getting longer, sun growing warmer and the hint of blossoms in tiny tight buds beginning to form. But for now, we are still in the in between, not really Winter, not really Spring, just the anticipation of new beginnings over the horizon.

I've already started my spring cleaning, something that is over due from last spring, yes I procrastinate. Poetry has pushed it's way to a back burner for me, I imagine I should allow myself to get back into a poetic mood and get writing again. Of course my goal is to write all of my poems for the April A to Z challenge before April begins, I guess I better get started. Will you be joining us for the April A to Z Poetry Prompts in April?

PublicDomainPictures.net
by Kim Rempel
Choices, we all have them, we all make them every single day. Some make choices by not making a choice, either way life continues, seasons pass, are you making a difference in someone's life? Are you making a difference in yours?

Poetry Prompt:

How do you fill your time during this in between? Are you prepping your garden, preparing the way for new projects? Write for ten minutes exploring how you want to spend your spring and what you can do to prepare for it.

Here is a second choice as today is February 29th, which only happens once every four years. I personally think it should be a holiday since it is an extra day, like a freebie, why shouldn't we have one day every four years that we could do whatever we want. What would you do if you had a day where you could do anything you wanted, no matter what?

Word Prompts:

In between
floating
anticipation
choices
unusual
extraordinary

I think this house is past spring cleaning,
more like it may need ghost cleaning.

Possible Poetry Type: Sedoka

Happy end of the month, whatever you may be doing, wherever you may be, I hope you make extraordinary choices for yourself today.

Peace,
Morgan Dragonwillow

Poetry Prompts - Break Open

Photo courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.net by George Hodan

It has been a great month of poetry here at Poets on the Page, I've enjoyed reading the prompts from the volunteers and poetry from the participants. This week I'm continuing on the theme, Tamara, started last Monday - meditation. Most of you know by now that I use music and dance to connect with my muse and more.

Several years ago I wrote a post on my blog regarding moving meditations, Meditation - A Writer Learning to Meditate. Over the years I've found it difficult to sit down and meditate as it is nearly impossible for me to be still until I discovered how to meditate while moving.

Gabrielle Roth says in her book, Sweat Your Prayers:
"When the mind is empty and receptive, big ideas flow through every cell of our body. When we're thinking too hard, we tense up and nothing can flow through us; our energy gets stuck in our heads. Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and trust that if you turn off your head, your feet will take you where you need to go."
Dancing and moving in a rhythmic motion is a great way to get out  of your head.

Great inspiration has been found during meditative states while washing dishes, walking, dancing or simply swaying back and forth while sitting or standing. Using moving meditation may help you to break open and find your words spilling onto the page.

Photo courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.net by Sabine Sauermaul
Poetry Prompt:

Choose which type of movement you would like to experiment meditating with. Choose music for yourself or use the music below. (If you are walking outside, please only use one ear to listen to music as it can be unsafe to walk with both ear pieces in your ears.) Listen to music that you enjoy, whether fast or slow, and move for a minimum of ten minutes, the longer the better but only as long as is comfortable for you - I have moved for as long as an hour but usually for ten to fifteen minutes. You can set an intention for your moving meditation to receive answers to a question or ask the question after you finish moving. Afterwards sit down and write anything and everything that came up for you during your moving meditation.

Word Prompts:

Expanding Consciousness
Divine Mystery
Flowing Energy

Possible Poetry Type:

Music Prompts:

I tend to enjoy moving to earthy drum music although I have moved to all different types of music. When I want to go really deep, to get out of my head and into a meditative state, earthy drum music takes me there every time. Here are some of my favorites, you can dance to one, several, or move to the whole thing. Remember, only do what is comfortable for you, never keep moving if you are out of breath or in pain.

Poetry Prompt 3 - Showing Up

Image by Morgan Dragonwillow

"Showing up is half the battle." I've heard this time and again through out my life, sometimes it annoyed me and sometimes I knew it was right because you have to show up to the page to be able to get the words written for your poetry.

There is a lot of chaos in my life right now and I tend to not even want to show up at the page. I'm sure you have days such as these as well, days that you feel so drained of energy that you don't think you have even one word you can write down.

Poetry Prompt:

Image by George Hodan from PublicDomainPictures.net
Free write for ten minutes about what drains you, what depletes your energy and makes you want to stay away from the page and what you do to change or transform it to help you get your words written. After you are finished, choose some or all of it and create a shape poem, that is when you arrange the words to create a shape and you can find samples on Shadow Poetry. The shape can be anything that you want it to be.

Word Prompts:

Exhaust
Consume
Flow

Sentence Starters:

When I begin to feel...
As the water drains...

Remember our prompts are only suggestions to help light your words on fire.

Gentle on Your Journey

Photo by Morgan Dragonwillow
“Keep Moving...
Move forward
Let go
Give in
Decide
and just Do
Progress every day
And make one step forward no matter what's in your way
Keep moving, till one day you wake up and you're there.” ― Emma Daley

Writing poetry every day for a month may be something that you do all the time, or it may seem like an impossible task, or at least difficult. Treats for success or treats for encouragement may help you stay on track.

It depends on my mood as to which I need but often it is knowing that dark chocolate and red wine are waiting for me to be finished will do it for me. Other times I will set a larger treat, such as taking myself to the movies, for writing one poem a day for a week or writing seven poems over a couple of days.

Whether you have little things to encourage your poetry journey or you just find loving ways to support yourself, remember, this is for you to dive in to see where your words will lead you. Be gentle to yourself and have compassion for your process of creating.

Favorite Tips From Previous Years:

How do you encourage or support yourself during the creative process?

Perspective is Everything

Photo by Morgan Dragonwillow

“What people in the world think of you is really none of your business.”
― Martha Graham

Perspective is everything. I am a sensitive person, at least that is what people have been telling me my whole life. "Don't be so sensitive, Morgan."

I think a lot of poets are sensitive to some degree, in fact it is probably a prerequisite for being a poet.

I do feel deeply and finding perspective can help me stay grounded when my life seems like a roller coaster.

When writing poetry, changing your perspective can help the words flow to the page. Whatever your subject may be, look at it from all angles.

And remember, it is none of their business what you think of them either.

Poetry Tip 5 - Mood Swings and Writing

Photo & quote by Morgan Dragonwillow
Tamara talked about Free Your Emotions on Thursday, I tend to have the opposite problem. Usually when I'm angry everyone knows it. Sometimes I tell myself I am too angry, sad, or depressed to write poetry. I think, "How can I possibly write when I feel like this?" But when I allow myself to sit down and write everything I am feeling, my poetry becomes clear and intense.

Strong emotions can transfer onto the page.

Of course you don't want to have a, "tear someone apart" type rant, it isn't meant to get even with someone, it is to help you work through it and take your poetry to the next level.

Poetry Tip 5:

Next time you are feeling strong emotions and don't think you can show up on the page, show up anyway. You never know what gems are waiting for you to experience through poetry.

Books:

Periodically I like to check out the Top 100 in Poetry on Amazon and see what is trending. You can also see the Top 100 Free in Poetry.

And an Article: How Poetry Can Improve Your Writing Craft

What about you, do your moods keep you away from the page?

Poetry Prompts: Writers Fully Writing

We are at the halfway mark for OctPoWriMo and it is that time when we take a look at how we feel about where we are in our writing - poetry - where we've been, and where we want to take it.

When I was thinking about halfway I found myself thinking about love and like the quote I created for the meme - there really isn't any way for love to be a halfway measure - you either love with all your heart, or the love isn't really there. Regardless of whether that love is for yourself or for someone else, you just can't do it halfway.

As in love, there are no halfway measures in writing, you're either writing or you're not.

Poetry Prompts:

What comes to mind for you when you hear the word halfway? Are you a half empty or half full kind of person? Do you look at half the month gone with regrets or excitement for what is yet to be written? Do you believe love is an all or nothing, or do you believe that you can love halfway? Free write for ten minutes about what halfway means to you or any of the previous questions.

Poetry Prompts - Moon Madness

The Full moon's energies are stirring things up today, pulling the ocean's tides, pulling on emotions. Some people say when the moon is full it brings out the crazy in people, that there are more incidences of disagreements and angry outbursts.

I say that it is a creative time, a water time. The moon is connected to water and emotions so I say let's use it for our creativity. Let's tap into the Full moon energies and pour it into our poetry.

Poetry Prompts:

Free write for ten minutes about the Full moon and what it means or doesn't mean to you. Do you feel any different during the full moon, do you even notice when the moon is full?

Word Prompts:

Photo by Morgan Dragonwillow
Full Moon
Moon Madness
Creativity
Water

Feeling Words:

Nostalgic
Impulsive
Dynamic
Bold

Shadow Poetry Type: Acrostic

Let's get creative, I chose the acrostic form because I love it and because you can use it in a simple one word form, two word form, and you can get as expansive with it as you choose. You can create a story if you choose like I did with my poem Lipstick or show more emotion as I did in my poem Penetrate. It is one of my favorite forms because you can do just about anything with it.

Most of all I hope you have fun diving into your poetry!

Autumn poetry-OctPoWriMo Day 5

The wind is taking on a chillier bent. Leaves are rushing to change. People are having pumpkin flavored everything and the Halloween decorations are going up. It's that autumn time of year.

Fall is also the time for harvest when the fruit of labor pops up to nourish our lands. Sunlight shortens and the nights grow longer.

Autumn itself can symbolize the melancholy of change, growing older and even death. There's also the new beginnings that start as well- school sessions, sports beginning to play in the Fall, the fun of Halloween. So many options to chose from.

There's such a beautiful dichotomy of renewal and death. Poets have been using autumn for creative fodder for years. Some classics are John Keats: 'To Autumn' and Robert Frost: 'Gathering Leaves.'

Poetry Prompt:

Here's your challenge (if you chose to accept it): Write a poem influenced by your feelings about autumn. Do you see autumn as a beginning or the beginning of the end?  Chose at least three from this list of words below.

The words:
                              chill
                              renewal
                              death
                              rebirth
                              harvest
                              melancholy
                              aging
                              change

Day 5 is here! Are you ready to write?

Poetry Prompts Day 4 - Poetry Revolution

“The pen is mightier than the sword!”― Edward Bulwer-Lytton
There is power in words and how we use them. I often write poems about social injustices and needed social change. In this day and age there is plenty of fodder for it, women's rights, LGBT, racism in America, child abuse, sexual abuse, genocide, the Middle East, Religion, and I could go on.

Many poets in history/herstory have fought for change through their words on the page, through their poetry.

Here are a few I found on Poems of Protest and Revolution.

Women have been fighting for a place in poetry probably since the beginning of time. The poets that have predominantly been shared in history have been men and it is past time that the wonderful women poets are allowed to shine. To find those in Herstory, check out Julie Jordan Scott's Literary Grannies

Below you will find more recent women poets of our time.
One of the most influential Feminist Poets of this century, Adrienne Rich said, "The mother's battle for her child with sickness, with poverty, with war, with all the forces of exploitation and callousness that cheapen human life needs to become a common human battle, waged in love and in the passion for survival."
