Poetry Prompts - Fantasy Land

I really feel the need to create an alternate world, a vision of what might be magical and beautiful and fantastic about being human. ~Shary Boyle

Poetry Prompts - Fantasy Land
Art by Morgan Dragonwillow

My five year old granddaughter and I started talking about what an 'Emily World' would look like. She said that everything would be made out of candy except the trees would be made out of Brocoli and the grass would be made out of Twizzlers.

If you lived in a fantasy world, what would it look like?

Word Prompts:

Fantasy
unusual
polka dots
moonbeams

Poetry Ebook Spotlight

Aggravated Felon - Poetry to Liberate the Soul by Wendy Grela-M'Poko

Description from Amazon:

In this collection of poems, Wendy turns an experience that should have broken her spirit, into one that ended up setting her free spiritually. In the mist of deportation the only thing that really understood Wendy was The Pen and Paper.

When Wendy started utilizing the tools at hand something magical happened. What started off as an escape turned into a passion. Using words to bring to life colorful experiences from delicacy and wonder, to pure heartache. Wendy's poems are fearless and leave nothing unexplored, no words wasted.
This diverse collection stands on no equal ground with anyone else’s works, and establishes her as an important poet needed for this generation.
Sunny is here to bring back poetry!

Poetry Prompts - Extraordinary Choices

“A tree can be tempted out of its winter dormancy by a few hours of southerly sun—the readiness to believe in spring is stronger than sleep or sanity.” ― Amy Leach, Things That Are
Photo courtesy of PublicDomainPictures.net by George Hodan

You can feel the energy of Spring on its way, days getting longer, sun growing warmer and the hint of blossoms in tiny tight buds beginning to form. But for now, we are still in the in between, not really Winter, not really Spring, just the anticipation of new beginnings over the horizon.

I've already started my spring cleaning, something that is over due from last spring, yes I procrastinate. Poetry has pushed it's way to a back burner for me, I imagine I should allow myself to get back into a poetic mood and get writing again. Of course my goal is to write all of my poems for the April A to Z challenge before April begins, I guess I better get started. Will you be joining us for the April A to Z Poetry Prompts in April?

Choices, we all have them, we all make them every single day. Some make choices by not making a choice, either way life continues, seasons pass, are you making a difference in someone's life? Are you making a difference in yours?

Poetry Prompt:

How do you fill your time during this in between? Are you prepping your garden, preparing the way for new projects? Write for ten minutes exploring how you want to spend your spring and what you can do to prepare for it.

Here is a second choice as today is February 29th, which only happens once every four years. I personally think it should be a holiday since it is an extra day, like a freebie, why shouldn't we have one day every four years that we could do whatever we want. What would you do if you had a day where you could do anything you wanted, no matter what?

Word Prompts:

In between
floating
anticipation
choices
unusual
extraordinary

more like it may need ghost cleaning.

Possible Poetry Type: Sedoka

Happy end of the month, whatever you may be doing, wherever you may be, I hope you make extraordinary choices for yourself today.

Peace,

Welcome Poetry Lovers!

Photo courtesy of the Quotes and Sites app.

We are happy to announce that we at OctPoWriMo have moved to Poets on the Page. We have decided to begin the new year with weekly poetry prompts.

Yes we will still be having our month long adventure in October!

But now we will also have weekly prompts on Monday AND we will also have a month long poetry adventure in April for NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month).

So join us once a week, once a month, and/or everyday in April and October!

You can write your poetry on your blog.

You can tweet your poetry.

You can Instagram your poetry.

And you can share your poetry (or poetry links) on the Facebook group - Poets on the Page.

Share your poetry with the hashtag #PoetsonthePage (I know it's long but the acronym is already being used by a band on Twitter).

Now for our first poetry prompt in 2016!

I recently read a quote on Wild Woman Sisterhood from the book, Who is Magic Babe Ning by Ning Cai who quoted Rachael Fallon yogini;

"Maybe the journey isn’t so much about becoming anything. Maybe it’s about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place."
This really hit home for me, it made me think about all of the conditioning from childhood, all of the shoulds and shouldn'ts, of who our family and friends think we are, of what society expects of us, and of course who we think we are.

I have often thought of who I would be without all of that. I even wrote a poem once about who I would be if I forgot everything, if I had amnesia, what kind of person would I be and who I would be without all of the attachments from the past.

How often do we think that we have to be better, do better, and become this better person? What if that wasn't it at all?

Poetry Prompt:

Write for ten minutes asking yourself this question - What if you stop trying to be who you aren't, let everything that isn't you drop away, and embrace the real you?

Word Prompts:

direct
frank
candid
open

Possible Poetry Type:

Shadow Poetry - Free Verse or Free Form

Photo Prompt:

Music helps me to connect with my muse and spill my words to the page. Here is an epic music mix that will hopefully inspire you to dance your words into the world.

Experiment dancing and writing to this music and see where the words lead you.

We aren't fond of rules here at Poets on the Page. The only thing we ask is that you are courteous with your fellow poets, that if you leave a comment for us or on another poet's blog, you share the love and support that all poets need.

Be who you are, I believe in you!

Poetry Prompts - Getting Creative

I love getting creative with words. Yesterday Amy talked about finding words from magazines and possibly collaging poetry and I'm following a similar vein today.

I'm sure most of you have heard of black out or found poetry, how you take a page from a book and choose words from all over the page to create a poem. You then circle the words and black out everything else.

I have a hard time blacking out real books regardless of whether or not they are old and useless (not that I think any book is old and useless) and here are a couple of techniques I use instead.

Last year Julie talked about found poetry and I couldn't wrap my head around it until I came up with this method. I decided to take a picture of a page from one of my favorite books and play with it in my paint program and I came up with this poem.

It was a lot of fun going through the page, finding the words I could use, and circling them. The butterflies I added just to be playful. If you can't read the poem here you can read it on my blog.

This year I wanted to post some black out poetry on Instagram and I wanted it to actually look like black out poetry. I have poetry magnets. I pulled out a dark washcloth. I chose a few words and came up with this.

Of course it isn't the traditional way of finding words but it was fun to play with the words and find a creative way to display them.

That of course is the whole point, play with your words, whether they stream from the ether or you find them in other places, have fun!

Poetry Prompts:

Choose a page from one of your books and take a photo of it, email it to yourself, choose some of the words and create a poem out of them. You can print out the page to play with it or just keep it on your computer and play with it in your photo editing program.

And of course these are only suggestions, here are some more.

Word Prompts:

Creative
Fun
Playing
Adventurous

Feeling Words:

Frisky
Hopeful
Cheerful
Playful

Breaking Out of the Box

Welcome to the third year of OctPoWriMo; 31 Poems in 31 Days! Whether you participated in previous years or are brand new, all are welcome here - younger and older, new to poetry or have been writing it for years - this is the place to be if you love or want to explore poetry.

There aren't many rules:

  • Be courteous to your fellow poets.
  • Visit, share, and comment on as many participants as you are comfortable with.
  • And most of all have fun!
There will be a linky that you can link up to daily regardless if you write to the poetry prompt or not. We are here to encourage and inspire you but where and how you come up with your poems is up to you.

Poetry Prompts:

The above quote is probably true about most if not all poets (and those that write poetry but don't consider themselves a poet -yet) that they cannot contain themselves, or at least they are working on breaking out of the box, the chrysalis that is holding them in.

What stage are you in, caterpillar, chrysalis, or butterfly?

Do you feel like you are boxed in or are you flying free?

Word prompts:

Chrysalis
Butterfly
Transformation

Shadow Poetry type: Free Verse

Remember all the prompts are suggestions, feel free to let your words flow wherever your muse takes them.

We have goodies! Enter the Rafflecopter below for your chance to win!
