OctPoWriMo - Poetry Prompt Day 21: Short, Sweet and Simple

Yesterday Morgan gave you a more “labor” intensive prompt, so I am going to be on the opposite end of the spectrum and give you what I think may be perceived as an easier prompt.

Before I get to the prompt though, I need to confess my latest dead-poet crush. I have developed quite a thing for that sexy beat poet who I always think of as looking like James Dean with glasses. Hot.

Anyway, I have been gaining momentum in my crush on him for a while now, but since visiting his grave in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was also a lover of Zen – and he deeply loved haiku and koan.

He wanted to try something different, though, and purely American, so he created the American Sentence Poem. It is like a haiku in that it is seventeen syllables, but the sound units are spread over a sentence rather than a three line poem.

Today, your challenge is to write a micropoem.

In other words, very short.Very sweet. Very simple.

Seventeen syllables or less.

Word Prompt: Micro

Quotes for inspiration:

“One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.”
― Jack Kerouac

“Live, travel, adventure, bless, and don't be sorry.”
― Jack Kerouac

“Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.”

- Jack Kerouac

OctPoWriMo loves - I am neither at home nor on my computer. I attempted to hand copy the coding for the linky. It didn't work. It looks fine from here, but if there is no linky here yet, please know I know and will fix it when I get home in the morning.

AAnna Stewart gave me permission to do so. I love you, Anna!

What is OctPoWriMo - Meet the Team

OctPoWriMo is a poetry month in October for poets all over the world to write 31 poems in 31 days. This blog and all of its volunteers are here to inspire, motivate, support, and cheer you on during this poetry adventure.

Starting today, the rest of September we will have daily posts filled with tips and resources to learn from while getting ready for the main event. Starting the first of October we will have daily prompts that you can choose to use or not. Either way you are free to link up your poems daily.

Even if you don't think of yourself as a poet you can join in on the fun. If you have nightmares about poetry from school, check out my post Fear of Poetry and maybe you will decide to join us anyway.

It is my pleasure to introduce the talented and inspiring women that have volunteered to help with the 2013 OctPoWriMo: 31 Poems in 31 Days!

Once again Julie Jordan Scott has decided to join this crazy poetry adventure. As some of you know I couldn't have handled this without her last year. Julie added richness and depth to this journey of OctPoWriMo: 31 Poems in 31 Days that I am positive would have been lacking if she hadn't helped me in 2012. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us this year!

I believe I met Janet Parfitt in Row80, a supportive online writing group that knows you have a life, and we connected through some of our writing and similarities of like mindedness. I believe she has a wildness just under the surface that she allows us to peak at once in awhile. It will be interesting to see how it comes out in OctPoWriMo.

Linda Roy and I met during last years OctPoWriMo and we have meandered in and out of each other's lives ever since. I love her "I don't like Mondays blog hop" and her humor as she handles her day to day life is irreplaceable.

Amy Phelps McGrath, if there is such a thing as a soul twin she is it for me. Her poetry speaks to me on many levels and her comments confirm how much we have in common. I believe that we are connected in ways that we haven't even discovered yet and I look forward to each and every new experience.

Nimue, silently watched last year's OctPoWriMo and decided to be brave this year and join our team. I look forward to getting to know her better through this poetry journey. I am sure she has a lot to contribute to OctPoWriMo.

And me... Morgan Dragonwillow,  if you were drawn here like most, because you love poetry, you may or may not know I am the Creatrix of OctPoWriMo. I am glad you decided to check us out and I hope you decide to join us on this wild poetry journey!

You can learn more about each of us, on the Creatrix and Contributors page or check out each of our blogs.

We have a wonderful line up for you and we will be sharing poetry tips, videos, other poets, books, links and other resources involving poetry helping you to get ready for OctPoWriMo in October.

~Morgan Dragonwillow

Remember to feed your poets, leave your thoughts in the comments, share with your friends and followers with the hashtag #OctPoWriMo, and come back to join in on the fun!

OctPoWriMo Poetry Prompt 31 - Infinity

It has been an interesting journey and I am very happy to announce that quite a few of you diligently wrote a poem every day. There has been a wide range of types as well as where you chose to display your poems. We have several participants that have tweeted micro poetry on Twitter, there are those that chose to display it on Facebook, and there have been those that blogged their poetry. Whether large or small, on the computer or off, all of us have traveled together diving into poetry, playing with words and hopefully we are all the better for it.

From Morgan:  When Julie and I discussed how we wanted OctPoWriMo to come to a close she brought up the infinity symbol. She said that we don't have to see this as an ending. I then saw it as a continuing cycle; fluid in our learning and growing. We are ever changing and though OctPoWriMo won't be creating prompts daily we all are still floating around this vast universe called the internet.

We will still have the Writing Poetry Group that I plan to peek into often to discuss poetry and throwing in a prompt now and then. I hope you will share what you are doing as I plan to share what I am working on as well.

For those that are interested, on Fridays I will be posting a weekly poetry prompt and link up on my website If you feel the urge to write poetry and would like inspiration, hop on by.

So you see this isn't an ending. This is, "I will see you soon."

Federico Fellini said, “There is no beginning, there is no end, there is only infinite passion.”

From Julie:  In my mind’s eye I see the infinity symbol as a three dimensional magnet, inviting me inside.  I can feel myself skating along the infinity symbol, hair blowing, sun on my face. I can become connected with the infinite there and everything and everyone else, from this point of creation, from the place where words are born and poetry is formed.

There has been poetry since the beginning and it will continue just as we will continue. It won’t be exactly the same necessarily, but these people and their words will continue to flow into and out of your consciousness.

You may meet your poetry friends, there, skating along the infinity symbol. Take their hands and together silently recall the love, the passion, the caring, the heartbreak and the healing that comes from writing poetry together as we have done.

Poetry Prompt: You can choose to share your experiences in free writing or verse of this past month. Write for ten minutes regarding the ups and downs, the ins and outs of writing poetry daily. You can share a window into your new friendships from this group.

Word Prompt: Infinity

Sentence Starters:

When I come around the bend I will see you again...

Circling through I discovered...

I walked along...

I want to thank you for taking this journey, this adventure into poetry with us and we look forward to reading what you write next. Remember to come back and share your link, tweet with the hashtag #OctPoWriMo and/or share on the Facebook Writing Poetry Group.

You have until November 7th to catch up on any poems you would like to finish and link up.

Peace to you,
Morgan

Please share and leave a comment before you go.

Poetry Prompt Day 30 - Final Days of OctPoWriMo

I am still behind in writing poetry this month but I am hanging in there. I wrote two poems today and I can see possibly writing two poems a day until I get caught up before November 7th. If you have lagged behind you still have time. I hope you meander through the prompts and let them inspire you to pour your words onto the page.

As we come to a close I realize how fast these days have gone by; lost to never return. How have you and I and we used them?

I will miss this daily checking in. I will miss seeing so many of you writing your poetry from the prompts and seeing the creativity bloom between all of us.

Poetry Prompt: I found this poetry reading of One Art by Elizabeth Bishop and it reminded me of time going by, of things, people, and places that move through our lives. Make a list of things, people, and places that have come and gone within your life. Choose one that you were unable to say goodbye to for whatever reason and write a letter of gratitude for what that person, place or thing brought into your awareness. Think outside the box, or better yet there is no box. It could be absolutely anything. An example could be a favorite pen and the fanciful writing you did with it, how your words seemed unstoppable until the day you went to find it and it was gone. Moving from the joy, to the loss, to the gratitude of having the moments of magical inspiration while it was around. You could choose a loved one that you have lost, a favorite pet, a friend, your home town that you never moved back to, a home, the possibilities are endless. As always you can take it wherever your pen, or fingers, lead you.

Word Prompt: Loss

Sentence Starter:

You weren't where I remembered but I wasn't worried, at first...

I couldn't let myself believe you were gone...

When I lost you...

Remember to come back and link up, Tweet with the hashtag #OctPoWriMo and share in the Writing Poetry Group on Facebook.

Wow what a ride this has been. This is my last individual prompt. Julie and I will both be writing and saying our farewells in tomorrow's final day of OctPoWriMo.

I.Believe.In.You!

Peace,
Morgan

Poetry Prompt Day 29 - Who Are You REALLY

As I thought about this poetry prompt and all that has come before, I wondered how much of yourself you have put onto the page and if you know yourself better than when we began.

Has your poetry taken you to unexpected places?

Have the words that flowed through you surprised you in some way?

I found this video of Sarah Jones performing her eight characters for TED and it had me thinking about who you are, who I am, and who we are really-really deep inside.

From that place deep inside...

Poetry Prompt: Describe yourself as if you were someone else looking in, what would they see. Describe your mannerisms, your inflections, your idiosyncrasies. Tell us who you are as if you were on the outside looking in. Now describe how you would be if you were truly yourself, if you didn't worry about what others would think, how you would behave differently if you weren't defined by your environment. Feel into these two people that are you. Share with us what you choose.

Word Prompt: Individual

Sentence Starters:

If I were to be me...

If you were to ask my friends...

If you were to ask my family...

I know I haven't been around much the last few days, I am in the midst of a major change in my life; we are moving from a house to a townhouse. I will definitely be one of the ones scrambling to play catch up and hoping to get all of the rest of my poems done before November 7th. Yes I said November 7th. For anyone that hasn't been to the Facebook page, Writing Poetry Group, and read that I have extended all of the links, from October 8th through to the end of October, out to November 7th. That will give everyone that is behind an extra week to catch up if they want to.

Please visit the other participants and share word love in the comments, Tweet with hashtag #OctPoWriMo and share in the Writing Poetry Group on Facebook. I hope you choose to answer the questions posed above-in our comment section. I am very curious what your answers might be.

Peace to you,
Morgan

Poetry Prompt Day 25 - Love Story

Unless I am mistaken we haven't discussed one of the main topics of many poets, Love. Every great poet has a love story. Rumi is considered to be one of the great love poets. Many of his works were words of love to his one great love.

Love is a madman, working his wild schemes, tearing off his clothes, running through the mountains.... ~Rumi

Poetry Prompt: What is your love story? It could be your first love, your parents love story, the love between you and your mate/life partner/husband/wife. Tell us of a great love in your life, maybe it is of another in your life, a child, a parent, grandparent. If you don't have a great love tell us of the love story in your future.

Word Prompt: Love

Sentence Starters:

It was an ordinary day...

I opened the door and bumped into...

Please visit the other participants and share word love in their comments. May you have a wonderful week.

Peace,
Morgan

Writing Poetry Day 23 - Double Challenge

I have a double poetry challenge for you today. You have possibly been writing poetry for the last 22 days, maybe longer. The first challenge is, I want you to take your favorite, absolute favorite poem that you have written, and record yourself reading it. If you have the capability I challenge you to video record it. And then take that recording and post it on your page. Hopefully we will all be able to figure out how to do that.

Yes the thought may be scary for some. It is a little scary for me that is why I am challenging you because I am challenging myself in the process. I am pushing myself to actually have this done before you read this. I have recorded my voice reading a poem recently but I haven't really shared it except with one person. I know Julie has. I know she performs her poems. This won't be new for her. But for some of the rest of us, this could be quite a challenge. Are you up for it?

Below you will find TED talks Rives Mockingbird 2006. I love how he performs and he is the one that inspired this prompt and challenge. I hope he inspires you as well.

Poetry Prompt: I believe challenge is going to be the word for the day. How does your body feel when you challenge yourself to do something new and/or different? Write for five to ten minutes about your physical reactions to being challenged, to challenging yourself to take a risk. Do your palms begin to sweat? Dive in and come up with new ways of saying what your body and mind are going through before, during and after a challenge.

Word Prompt: Challenge

Sentence Starters:

When I see a challenge before me...

The moment has arrived...

We have eight days left in this wild ride of 31 Poems in 31 Days. Be kind to yourself if you haven't written everyday, I am. Tell us, Julie and I, what you have learned so far on this poetry journey in the comments below.

Come back after you have recorded your poem and created your next post to link up and share with us. Visit the link before and after yours to share word love of encouragement and support for the other poets in their comments.

Peace to you,
Morgan

Poetry Prompt Day 21 - Weaving and Flowing

Sometimes things just don't work out the way you think they are going to. Often life seems to go a lot smoother when you can give up expectations and go with the flow. It is a difficult lesson for me to learn but one I truly need to learn in this life. I have control issues. What, you say... Yes I do.

Poetry Prompt: What in your life would be smoother if you let go of control and went with the flow? Write for five to ten minutes exploring what you need to let go of.

Word Prompt: Flow

Sentence Starters:

When Life Throws You a Wrench...

Weaving and flowing...

May you have a wonderful Sunday exploring your words and flowing with grace and ease.

Please visit the other poets and leave your word love in their comments.

Peace to you,
Morgan

Writing Poetry Day 20 - Playing With Words

As most of you probably know I've been a bit stuck with my words the last week. Well, actually, I've been a bit stuck in the in-between that I can do on occasion. Today I was determined to become unstuck and decided to hop on over to the Shadow Poetry page of different types of poetry. I love this page but I still don't visit it often.

I played with a piece of art I created last year and
came up with something new and different.
I call it Streams of Love.
Today I read about Shape Poetry, Tanka, Haiku, Diatelle and Essence.  I also discovered the Rhyme Zone; a fascinating place to go if you are having trouble finding a rhyming word. So let's play with words today, let's form them, shape them, count them, rhyme them and turn them this way and that; until you discover something new and different and have a a lot of fun doing it!

Poetry Prompt: Choose an older poem, or two, of your own. Go to the Shadow Poetry page and randomly select several, oh let's say from 3 to 5 at minimum, of different types of poetry. Then pick one or maybe even two, making sure it is something that intrigues you and doesn't feel loaded with rules or overly hard; this is suppose to be fun. And then play to your heart's content creating something new with your old poem. You can also do this with a new poem of course. The thing about rules here at OctPoWriMo is that they are meant to be bent or even broken. We are here to stir your imagination not box it in. So let your imagination FLY!

Word Prompt: Play

Sentence Starters:

Playing with words I see...

The words dance on the page...

You can share your poetry here in the linky, with the Writing Poetry Group on Facebook, and/or with the hashtag #OctPoWriMo on Twitter. Always remember, I.Believe.In.You!

Writing Poetry Prompt Day 18 - Time

Time, you never seem to have enough unless you are doing something you don't want to do and then it seems to stretch on forever. You are now into the downhill side of writing poetry daily for the month of October. Have you found the time to write poetry everyday this month?

I unfortunately let other things get in the way. I'm not going to be hard on myself and I hope you won't either if you haven't written a poem a day. I have written more poetry than ever before in a short period of time and we still have twelve days left of October.

Sometimes I feel that life is passing me by, not slowly either, but with ropes of steam and spark-spattered wheels and a hoarse roar of power or terror.  It's passing, yet I'm the one who's doing all the moving.  ~Martin Amis

Prompt: Time, do you have too much, too little or just the right amount? Write about your relationship with time. Tell us the joys and pains of time in your life.

Word Prompt: Time

Sentence Starters:

If I had enough time I would...

Time is...

Have fun exploring time with words. Come back and link up, visit your neighbors, but most of all enjoy writing your poetry.

Peace,
Morgan

Poetry Prompt Day 16 - Which Side Are You On

I am having a rough couple of days and I came across this video that I immediately wanted to use for this poetry prompt. The video itself is a song by Natalie Merchant, Which Side Are You On which I believe is about coal miners.  I hope it stirs your imagination the way that it did mine and has you writing pages of poetry.

Poetry Prompt: Think of a time that you were stuck in the middle, between issues. Actually there is a lot of that going on now with politics heating up as we move toward the November elections. Most people feel strongly and of course they think their side is the right side and the other side is the wrong side. In such a tug of war no one wins. This video made me think of that but it also made me think of so much more. Make a list of things you have felt caught in the middle of and pick one. Write for ten minutes then see if there is anything within it that you want to share.

Word Prompt: Hands

Sentence Starters:

My Grandfather’s hands…

Torn between two sides…

Hands old before their time…

I hope your days are filled with love and wonder. Please visit the other poets as they open veins and bleed onto the page. Or at least it feels that way sometimes.

Much Love and Peace to You,
Morgan

Poetry Prompt Day 14 - Reflection in Your Eyes

With some people solitariness is an escape not from others but from themselves.  For they see in the eyes of others only a reflection of themselves.  ~Eric Hoffer

It is once again Short and Sweet Sunday. I thought I would shake things up a little and do things a little differently.

Sentence Starters:

What I see when I look in your eyes...

I look in the mirror...

Word Prompt: Reflection

And if that doesn't tickle your fancy...

Tell me about your favorite chocolate experience.

I hope you are enjoying this adventure into poetry. I know I am. Have a fabulous rest of the weekend!

Peace to you,
Morgan

Are you taking the time to visit the other poets that are visiting you? Let's make sure everyone is receiving word love this week!

Poetry Prompt Day 12 - Where Passion Resides

All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility. ~William Wordsworth

"Powerful feelings..." as William Wordsworth writes I believe is the basis for poetry whether it is joy, sadness, anger, or any powerful emotion that often has you vibrating with the energy of it.

I wrote a poem several years ago, in fact I don't think I even realized it was a poem, I just had this strong emotion bubbling within me and had to get it down on paper. It was a time that I was feeling very passionate about what was/is going on in the world both locally and globally. I changed the layout because it was basically a stream of consciousness in one big blob.

1/13/07

That path that leads to serenity

                                                   stretching beyond

                                          The Divine reaching in
and out
                                              telling us we are

                                                   laced
together saying

                                               We.are.one.

Prompt: Dig deep inside of you and find where your passion is residing. What pushes your buttons, what creates overwhelming feelings of emotion that beg to be put onto the page. They can be happy, sad, angry, any deep feeling, channel it into your poem.

Word Prompt: Passion

OctPoWriMo Poetry Prompt #11 - Write What You Must Write.....

"Writing a poem is discovering." Robert Frost

It’s been a rough couple days for me.

You know, those days when you say, “Nothing worse can happen, right?”
I sang “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar at karaoke and even that didn’t help my demeanor. I did nail the song, though, or so I was told.

It got ugly, especially ugly, after I had a meeting with a man who is putting together a group of local writers who are creating five minute monologues to mirror the style of The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros which is the current selection for One Book, One Bakersfield.

It took a lot to write those monologues. The funny one was easier than the serious one, but neither topics are ones I regularly speak about. The serious one I have never, ever spoken about aloud to anyone. And now, in yet another brilliant, pushing my own envelope move, I will be performing these monologues aloud in only a few weeks.

So now at least 100 more people here in Bakersfield will know.

What the hell have I done?

Why did I write them?

Three reasons:

I had a context.

I had an opportunity.

I had to get the words on the page so they would stop eating me from the inside.
I had write it, I had to speak it, I had to say what was unthinkable to say. I simply had to - it felt like there was no choice.

There are all sorts of topics we declare unsayable, things that may make others squirm or blush or turn away or gasp.

These topics make the most powerful art, the most potent poetry, create the most important conversations.

Like LeConte Stewart said, "Art exists so that we may say the unsayable. Art is always a matter of caring, of being moved. Unless we care, ideas of value are not apt to come, and so far as painting goes, the painter must care. He must be moved by what he is trying to paint."

To make it applicable to us as poets, try it like this.

“As far as poetry goes, the poet must care. She must be moved by the poem she is trying to write.”

Tonight’s prompt is going to be offered in two levels.

Depending on the feedback and who feels comfortable diving this deep only ten days in, I will post a reminder in one of my prompts for those who care to start more slowly.

Take a few moments in silence when you are done reading my words. Leave your mind open to what you have resisted writing because it makes you sweat or it makes you worried your Mom will get mad or it makes you apologize to your kids before the words have even left your pencil.

Then use that energy to write your poem.

You may either write about your resistance to writing this or write about whatever it is that needs to be said, needs to be told, needs to be spoken.

If you are up to it, challenge yourself.

One Word Prompt: Resist

Sentence Starter: I am not going to resist saying ________ anymore

(or)

Today I declare a truce with resistance….

You may find inspiration in the Road Closed photo above or in the video below.... just please, simply write your words. Share them with someone somewhere.

OR, as always, choose your own topic

I hope before you take your few moments in silence you will watch this video of Katie Makkai performing her poem “Pretty.” It is a moving performance and one I am sure many of us will understand, at least on some level.

Your written words give you power. Who knows, they may help give someone else power, too.

A side note: I am going to bed without adding the linky for today. I am so sorry, but I don't have the code and I need, need, need, need to sleep. Please trust it will be put here as early in the day as possible. In the meantime, post your links in the comment section.

With Much Love,

Julie

Writing Poetry Day 10 - Morning Muse

“Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” ~Anton Chekhov

This is something I aspire to, to expand my writing and poetry into all of the feeling, sensing realms as Julie Jordan Scott talks about in many of her hints, tips, and prompts to inspire yours and our poems. So very glad she joined us for this wonderful poetic adventure!

The body is a wondrous place for our soul to reside. It feels on so many levels and it is a wealth of material for our poetry. Such as the experiences through the eyes of a child, what they feel, see, hear, and touch; to an aging adult, and all of their feeling experiences from their aching joints to their failing eyesight, how hard each movement becomes. How precious each moment is to each of them, whether realized or not.

Poetry Prompt: Write about that moment of time between sleeping and waking when your body goes from seemingly being numb to fully feeling and awake. Describe your breath, your movements, how your body feels, and the sounds that you can hear around you. Are you excited to be awake? Are you dreading the day? Is there awareness that enters you that sends feelings shooting through your body now or in sometime in your life?

Word Prompt: Morning

Sentence Starter: When I wake up...

Or

My morning begins...

Or a third option

Before I open my eyes...

I have always found that time between waking and sleep to be very special. I hope you find the wonder in it and share it on the page. Please visit your neighboring poets, leave them encouragement in their comments, and share them with your friends on Twitter and Facebook. Do come back and link up your poem so that we may share in your experience. If you don't have a blog you can create a doc in our file on the Facebook Writing Poetry Group.

Poetry Writing Prompt #9 - Music of Traffic & Whatever You Hear

Merriam Webster defines resonance like this: the intensification and enriching of a musical tone by supplementary vibration: a quality of evoking response.

Now add cadence to your writing voice and the result will be even deeper.

What is cadence?

It is the measure or beat of a rhythmical flow.  It is the snapping of fingers in time, the metronome back and forth or backandforth or baaaaaccccckkkkkk and fooorrrrthhhhhhh.

Resonance and cadence are heard in the silence of your reader's mind. It is your words blending
with their consciousness  that will create magic.

We craft our words and we hear ourselves better, we "get" ourselves better, we allow the richness  and wonder of the process to bubble over and through us.

We may be like World Music, we may be like jazz. We may be like country or rhythm and blues. We may sound like Lindsey Lohan or Boy George or  Aretha Franklin.

Lindsey Lohan is not Lindsey Buckingham.

Boy George is not George Strait.

Aretha Franklin is not Frank Sinatra.

Listen to the rhythm and sound of the poem below. Read it aloud to "hear" it better.

Do you hear tires against slightly moist pavement?

The Music of Traffic

The music of traffic:
the cars passing by
swish whoosh moosh
schwaaaaa schwaaaaaa

Barely aware of the heavenly scent
of the garden surrounding her
Home to one of Rodin's  Prodigal.

He is here from long ago, bronze listening.
Poised, considering, summoning life
Swish whoosh moosh
Schwaaaaa Schwaaaaaa -

Bordering Wilshire Boulevard
the cars played their tire-instruments
The peaceful stillness
the muffled emissions
Swish whoosh moosh
schwaaaaa schwaaaaaa

Standing, honoring, breathing
she closes her eyes to feel
soft movement of the cars and
the calling of the garden,
the confidence of Rodin's sculpture.

Each and all surrounded by

The music of traffic
cars passing by, not hearing
not smelling, not taken in -
swish whoosh moosh
schwaaaaa schwaaaaaa

=====
Did you hear the cars driving by in those words?

Take a moment (or five) to close your eyes and listen.

In the silence of your narration, what do you hear? Have a notebook and pencil or pen ready to write after you listen, silently, and quietly enjoy what gifts the sounds around you offer.

When you open your eyes, write what you heard and then write any connections you made from what you heard. How might these sounds be described? How do those sounds connect with your life and with your future reader’s lives?

Sentence Starter "When I listen to the _____, it tells me..."
